Woodbury County History

Woodbury County was originally established in 1851 as Wahkaw County. In 1853, the Iowa Legislature renamed it in honor of Levi Woodbury, a U.S. senator, governor of New Hampshire, and Supreme Court justice. The first county seat was Thompsonville, followed by Sergeant Bluff, before the seat moved to Sioux City in 1856. Today, Woodbury County is part of the Sioux City metropolitan area and includes reservation land owned by the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska (Ho-Chunk).
