Sioux County History

Sioux County was formed in 1851 and has been self-governed since 1860. Named for the Sioux tribe, the county saw significant Dutch immigration beginning in 1869. The county seat moved from Calliope to Orange City in 1872. The Sioux County Courthouse, completed in 1904, remains in use today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
