Monona County History

Monona County, established in 1851, is located in western Iowa and had a population of 8,751 as of the 2020 census. Lewis and Clark traveled through the region in 1804 during their exploration of the Louisiana Purchase. The area was later memorialized as Lewis and Clark State Park. The county was officially organized in 1854, and the county seat moved from Ashton (Bloomfield) to Onawa in 1858. Additional historical details are available on the county’s Wikipedia page.
