Madison County History

Established in 1846, Madison County is located in southern Iowa and was named after James Madison, the fourth president of the United States. The county seat, Winterset, is widely known for its historic covered bridges and agricultural heritage. As of the 2020 census, the county has a population of 16,548 residents.
