Osceola County History

Osceola County, formed in 1871, is the smallest and newest county in Iowa. It was named after the Seminole war chief Osceola. As of the 2020 census, the population is 6,192. The county seat, Sibley, is named after Minnesota leader H. H. Sibley. Early settlement began with Captain Eldred Huff, who laid the first claim in 1871. The first courthouse was built in 1873, serving multiple civic functions until the replacement structure was completed in 1903. (Source: Wikipedia)
