Dickinson County History

Organized in 1857, the county was named for Daniel S. Dickinson, a U.S. Senator from New York. According to the 2020 census, the population is 17,703 residents. In addition, the area is home to the Iowa Great Lakes region—West Okoboji Lake, East Okoboji Lake, and Spirit Lake—making it one of Iowa’s most popular tourism and recreation destinations.

Altogether, the region covers 404 total square miles, including approximately 23 square miles of lakes and water features. As a result, population and economic growth have been influenced by tourism, agriculture, and continued lakefront development. (Source: Wikipedia)
