Greene County History
Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,771. The county is named in honor of General Nathanael Greene. Greene County was formed on January 15, 1851, and became self-governed in 1854. Early settlement began with Truman Davis along the Raccoon River. The first courthouse, built in 1856, was a wooden structure; a red-brick courthouse followed in 1870. The present Greene County Courthouse, still in use today, was completed in 1917.
