Calhoun County History
Calhoun County was formed in 1851 from open prairie originally designated as Fox County. It was renamed in 1853 after U.S. Vice President John C. Calhoun. When the Illinois Central Railroad expanded through the area in 1870, the county seat moved from Lake City to Rockwell City. Additional growth followed, and the current courthouse—constructed in 1913—still serves the county today. More details are available on the county’s Wikipedia page.
