Fayette County History
Fayette County began in 1837 and takes its name from Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, a French general who aided the American Revolution. The county first emerged during a major reorganization of Dubuque County, and its boundaries shifted several times between 1838 and 1847 as Iowa Territory formed and Iowa later became a state. Officials completed the county’s formal organization in 1850. Additional historical information is available on Wikipedia.
