Allamakee County History

Established in 1847, Allamakee County is Iowa’s northeasternmost county, with Waukon serving as the county seat. The county’s name origin is debated, with theories ranging from an Indigenous leader to early trader Allen Magee. Agriculture and river commerce played key roles in early settlement.
