Muscatine County History

Early development in Muscatine County was shaped by its position along the Mississippi River. Established in 1836 during the Wisconsin Territory period, the county was created from part of Des Moines County. One commonly accepted origin of the county’s name links it to Muscatine Island and the Mascouten tribe, who inhabited the region before westward settlement.
