Cedar County History

Known today for its deep ties to Iowa’s heritage, Cedar County traces its beginnings to 1837 when it was established from Dubuque County territory. Tipton, founded in 1840, became the county seat. Prior to the Civil War, the West Branch area became an important stop along the Underground Railroad, and the county marks the birthplace of President Herbert Hoover.
