Hardin County History
Established in 1851 Hardin County was named after Colonel John J. Hardin, who died during the Mexican–American War. Since then, the area has continued to grow and change, eventually reaching a population of 16,878 according to the 2020 census. The county courthouse, constructed in 1892 and opened in 1893, also carries historical significance because it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Furthermore, the county gained additional recognition when it served as a filming location for the 1996 movie Twister.
