Washington County History

Established in 1838 and renamed in 1839 to honor George Washington, Washington County is located in southeast Iowa and forms part of the Iowa City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat, Washington, developed as an early agricultural and commercial center. As of the 2020 census, Washington County has a population of 22,565 residents.
