Poweshiek County History: Poweshiek County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. Poweshiek County was formed in 1843. It was named for Meskwaki Chief Poweshiek (1791–1854), a chief of the Fox Indian people. The Poweshiek County Courthouse, completed in 1859, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
