Cerro Gordo County History
Cerro Gordo County was founded in 1851 and named after the Battle of Cerro Gordo in the Mexican–American War. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 43,127. Mason City became the county seat in 1858. The county is also known for the tragic 1959 plane crash near Clear Lake, which killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper.
